What is Amendment 2?

Amendment 2, also called “Florida Marriage Protection Amendment,” is an attempt by anti-gay groups and individuals to prohibit same-sex couples from having marriage equality in this state or even from having the “substantial equivalent” of marriage rights.  Sources say, “The ballot language is written in very broad terms that will be interpreted by our courts.  Possible scenarios can include the termination of all domestic partner registries in the state.  Domestic Partner registries provide for hospital visitation rights.  When the state of Michigan passed similar language, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled that the state’s constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage prevents public institutions from providing benefits to domestic partners employed by those institutions.  In our own state, the Florida Legislature Office of Economic and Demographic Research clearly denotes the possibility of losing domestic partner registries, the loss of recognized common law marriages and other consequences affecting both same-sex and opposite sex couples.”

Celebration MCC does not endorse political parties or candidates, nor can we ever tell individuals how to vote.  That having been said, it is also true that Celebration MCC is firmly opposed to using religion or politics to target, vilify, or discriminate against any group of people.  This article is posted only to inform you of the issue so that you can make an informed decision at election time.

Reporting Acts of Discrimination to CCNDC

The Collier County Non-Discrimination Coalition (CCNDC) has established a PHONE LINE to report incidents of discrimination in housing, education, public accommodations, and employment in Collier County. Issues involving sexual orientation and gender identity are    included. The PHONE LINE number is 239-436-7999.

Some of you may have noticed the flyers sitting on the front table where you pick up your name tags for services on Sunday. CCNDC would appreciate your assistance in distributing these flyers all over Collier County, especially in your places of work, clubhouse bulletin boards, libraries, parks, and educational institutions. English, Spanish, and Creole versions are available from me upon request, or you can go directly to CCNDC’s web site and downloard what you need.

Volunteer help is vital to keep the CCNDC PHONE LINE staffed and Spanish-speaking      volunteers are really needed at this time. Training will be provided.
